CENTRE
FOR CONTEMPORARY ART - ARCHIVE AND PROJECT SPACE
The
Archive section of the Centre houses a permanent collection
of documentary materials relating to staff research. Box files
containing catalogues, press cuttings, journal essays and
book extracts, invitation cards and brochures, are assigned
to each member of the Fine Art staff as well as some staff
from other areas of Art and Fashion including Fashion/Fashion
Promotion, Music, Performance, +Audio Visual Media.
There are also audio and video tapes and slide transparencies
available to view.
A
section on Associate Artists - a selection of Fine Art Graduates
documentation of work is also continuously developing.
The
Archive also houses files on every project initiated by Professor
Lubaina Himid over the past three years. These include exhibitions
at the university, projects in collaboration with other art
institutions and student initiated projects.
Projects
are wide ranging and include work in progress residencies
and displays, conventional exhibitions of small and large
two and three dimensional works either shown at the Centre
or in Victoria Building Gallery.
We
have shown time based work, launched art books and been a
venue for national touring exhibitions. Staff are encouraged
to curate exhibitions and to exhibit, to build the work at
the Centre into their teaching and to participate in discussions
around the programme.
Students,
mostly from Art & Fashion visit the Archive and find the
research material useful in a variety of ways.
The
work shown both in the Project Space and Victoria Gallery
often provides a small insight into contemporary culture on
the doorstep and can help to make links to work on show in
other venues.
